Xillinux works like any Ubuntu / Linux system running on a desktop, and that includes the USB connections. Hotplugging works. Why it doesn't in your case isn't clear. Maybe /var/log/syslog may shed some light.
This way or another, this problem should be treated as if it happened on a desktop. Maybe shaky connectors cause too much mess when plugging in something new. Maybe there's an inrush current problem (too much current demanded by device immediately on connection).
So I suggest looking at the logs, trying with a hub (or a different hub, if you're already using one) etc.
